How My Mother Inspired Me to Become A Financial Advisor

My mom, Kathleen, was solely responsible for looking after my two siblings and me after my parents divorced for the second time when I was 12. She got a job at the Chateau Hotel and Conference Center (second shift), so she could take care of my younger sister during the day until I could help out after school. She stayed in this position for five years.

Her dedication to our family and work ethic helped me understand what it meant to take care of a family and serve others. Something about her experience I learned later in life became a critical factor in my decision to become a Financial Advisor.

My mom turned down promotion after promotion during her time at the hotel. I was shocked when I learned this since a promotion would’ve benefitted her and the family during that time.

There were two reasons she chose to stay in her entry-level role instead of advancing:

  1. Daycare costs were prohibitive, and my younger sister was too young to go to school.

  2. The cost of a business wardrobe needed for her new position was not in our budget.

While I am forever grateful for her sacrifices, I also wish I was in a position to give her the information and help she needed to take those promotions at the time. The benefits of the promotion outweighed the expenses and inconvenience, but without the right guidance, regardless of who you are or what position you’re in, it’s hard to make an informed decision.

Success is simple. Do what's right, the right way, at the right time. - Arnold H. Glasow

There’s no limit to the impact receiving the right advice at the right time can have on your life, family, company, etc.

As a Financial Advisor, I dedicate myself to providing people with the right information when they need it most. I don’t want anyone to turn down an opportunity or miss out on accomplishing their long-term goals because they couldn’t afford a meeting with a Financial Advisor or didn’t have anyone available to talk them through an upcoming decision. This is one of the reasons I never charge a client or non-client to have a discussion with me.

The playing field isn’t level, and even the hardest working, informed, and honest people need help from others. I will always make time to lift others up, especially during times of need.

Note: My mom eventually accepted the promotion and loved her time at the Chateau.
